Things to do in Montville and Maleny

Montville is ideal for a weekend getaway or a longer holiday. Just a 90-minute drive from Brisbane and once you’re here, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland has so many attractions and things to do.

Your cottage at Montville Grove is 3 km from Montville so you’re just a few minutes from excellent restaurants and cafes, wine-tasting, art galleries, cool shops, walking trails and national parks.

Maleny, Flaxton and Mapleton are just a short drive away through rolling green hills with spectacular views all the way.

The Sunshine Coast beaches, Underwater World, Eumundi Markets, Australia Zoo and the Ginger Factory at Yandina are all within a 45 minute drive.

If you don’t feel like driving, you can join a wine and food tour or we can help you arrange a private chauffeur-driven tour.

Montville is surrounded by national parks so you have a choice of walking trails, whether you want to get your heart rate up on the Hinterland Great Walk or take the easy route at Maleny’s Mary Cairncross rainforest reserve.

We’re also blessed with restaurants and cafes. Within a 10-minute drive, you’ll find 11 restaurants that open for dinner plus another dozen restaurants within a 30 minute drive. With so many choices, we created our own restaurant guide. Click here to check out the local restaurants.

We also have a blog page where we post news items about things to do in Montville, Queensland.

Things to do in Maleny, Queensland

Lots of our guests take a drive to Maleny during their stay at Montville Grove so here’s list of our favourite things to do in Maleny. It’s only a half-hour drive from Montville to Maleny with amazing views and scenery.

Our favourite Maleny cafes

Sarah’s Unplugged in the middle of Maleny’s main street. Everything is good but the pineapple cake is our nomination for the best cake in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Maple 3 Café at the bottom of the main street. Delicious cakes, pies and Cornish pasties. You can have a glass of wine with your lunch and you might get a hello from a water dragon.

Bookshops

Rosetta Books. If you love books, you’ll probably want to move in and live in this bookstore. You can even get a coffee and soak up the bookstore vibe, reading esoteric magazines. It’s in the middle of the main street of Maleny, just up from the IGA.

PS:Books is a second hand book shop, opposite Rosetta Books. It has a great range, really well-organised good window displays and the books smell fresh.

Maleny Bookshop is a little further up the main street, specialising in rare and out-of-print books and tomes that make you look smart and philosophical.

Lucky Maleny … two microbreweries

Brouhaha is a microbrewery and restaurant. It’s on Coral Street in a complex with doctor, dentist and radiology… proof that beer is a health food! The view at the back is delightful.

MacLeod Brewing Company at the Big Barrel at 787 Landsborough-Maleny Road. Shares its space with Maleny Mountain Wines so everybody’s happy (even vegans who can duck into the Live Foods Café next door for a tumeric latte).

Art Galleries

It’s an arty town, Maleny so well-endowed with art galleries.

Art on Cairncross is also on the Landsborough-Maleny Road (at 3 Panorama Place to be exact) with a fine collection of paintings, ceramics, glass and sculpture.

Peace of Green is an artists’ cooperative gallery at 38 Maple Street, Maleny (half-way up the main street) with an interesting collection of art including affordable small pieces. Very relaxing place to browse.

Maleny Art Direct also showcases work from local artists. It’s next door to Rosetta Books on Maleny’s main street.

Rainforest walks

Mary Cairncross Reserve on Mountain View Road is a spectacular rainforest reserve. Ten steps in and you’re immersed in the rainforest. Wide trails, great birdwatching and easy walking on flat terrain.  The only danger is that you may encounter a school excursion of raucous 10-year olds.

There are also two little pocket-sized walks right in the centre of Maleny.

One goes off Coral Street with a boardwalk and path that follows Obi Obi Creek through to the showground. Peaceful, shady and an easy way to lose yourself in nature for half an hour without going out of your way.

The other walk takes you into a parallel dimension. To find the portal, go behind the library on Coral Street and you’ll find a path that takes you into a secret park, formed by an oxbow bend in the creek. Perfect for a picnic.
