Bushwalking for the faint-hearted in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland
There’s nothing like a walk amongst the trees to soothe the soul … especially if it’s not too strenuous. Even better if there’s a café at the end of the trail.
To help you plan your next visit to Montville, here’s a selection of easy walking trails around Montville and Maleny … with accompanying cafe recommendations.
Montville – Baroon Lookout Walk
Let’s start at Montville with the Baroon Lookout Walk. You’ll find it at the bottom of Narrows Road, just down the hill from Montville Grove. The walk is about 2km from the carpark to the second lookout and the terrain is gentle. Just make sure you turn back at the second lookout or the trail will take you all the way to Kondalilla Falls. The café stop to complete the Baroon Lookout Walk is Secrets Café on the lake.
Montville – Russell Family Park
Also in Montville, we have Russell Family Park, hidden behind the shops in the main street with spring-fed waterholes, picnic tables and a 600m paved walking trail winding through it all. If you’re looking for a reviving coffee and cake after this little walk, we recommend Little May Espresso or Waffle-On. That’s Russell Family Park in the photo at the top of this page and you can click below to see a video about the park and its poetry trail.
At Mapleton Falls, the Wompoo Circuit is easy walking and about 1.3 km long. The lookout has a panoramic view across the Mary Valley. Back in Mapleton, stop at La Botiga for a frittata.
Maleny – Mary Cairncross Park
Escape into the rainforest at Mary Cairncross Park and follow the trails through the tall trees, spotting pademelons and myriad bird species. There’s a new café at the front of the park with the Glass House Mountains laid out before you and a viewing platform upstairs.
Maleny trails in the centre of town
Maleny has some super-easy walking trails right in the centre of town.
To get onto the Maleny Trail, park in the River Centre shops at the bottom of the main street and go around to the boardwalk at the back of the shops and start walking. The trail takes you along the Obi Obi Creek to the Maleny golf course. It about 5.5 km return and there are unshaded sections, so take a hat or avoid hot days. Vintage Black is a good little café on the boardwalk at the back of Concept IT. If you’re lucky, you might see a platypus in the creek near the café.
The Obi Boardwalk trail follows the creek in the other direction. Go a little way up Coral Street and you’ll see the entry to the walk. It’s a boardwalk and path that meanders along the creek to the showgrounds. It’s only 500 metres to the showgrounds but if you want to extend, walk up through the showground and back into town on the Maleny-Stanley River Road, stopping at Brouhaha microbrewery for lunch.
Finally, the easiest walk of all and it’s also in the centre of Maleny but you need to find the hidden portal. First find the Maleny Library, go behind the library and a path will present itself to you. Say hello to the water dragons along the path and they’ll allow you into a charming little park created by an oxbow bend in the creek. There’s a picnic table in the centre so take a picnic and soak up the solitude.
